How it works
Each town has a price level, where 100 is typical for the US. The salary you would need is your salary multiplied by the new town's price level and divided by your current town's.
The price levels start from the US Bureau of Economic Analysis regional price parities, which measure everyday prices including housing, and are adjusted for each town using its own rent. They describe typical spending, so your own costs may differ, for example if you own a home with a fixed loan.
What it leaves out
Income tax differs a lot between states and is not part of the price level. Compare it separately, as a move to a state without income tax can be worth more than the price difference.
