How it works
Hours a year are the one-way minutes, doubled for the round trip, times the number of days you commute in a year. Fuel is the miles driven divided by your car's miles per gallon, times the fuel price. Wear and servicing is a per-mile amount you set.
Parking, tolls and transit fares are not included. If you commute by transit, bike or on foot, use the time figure and ignore the money.
The town figure
The average commute is the Census Bureau's mean travel time to work for people who live in the town, from the American Community Survey. It is one way, and it covers workers who commute, not remote workers.
